Topic: Managing Workplace Civility During Turbulent Times

According to SHRM (2024):

  • 27% more employees cited political viewpoint differences as a contributing factor to incivility at work in Q3 than in Q2 2024.
  • Society-level and workplace-level scores on the Civility Index rose slightly in Q3 compared to Q2 meaning that rates of uncivil behaviors increased in the past couple of months.
  • On average, U.S. workers scored a 46.1 out of 100 on the Q3 Civility Index when asked about incivility they personally experienced or witnessed in their everyday lives (i.e., both in and out of work) over the past month (2024).
  • More than two-thirds of workers (68%) agreed that their manager or supervisor could have done more to prevent incivility, and 65% said that managers and supervisors care more about business objectives than how people are treated in their workplace, according to the Q3 Civility Index.

Employees believe their employers need to be doing more to foster a more civil work environment.

Addressing incivility promotes employee mental health, employee satisfaction, and a better work environment. In total, US organizations collectively lose approximately $2,168,249,033 per day in reduced productivity and absenteeism due to incivility, according to the Q3 Civility index (2024).

SHRM has outlined 5 steps to encourage civil conversations at work:

  • Educate yourself by understanding the current state of civility and incivility in the workplace and society at large.
  • Establish a shared understanding of civility.
  • Establish and foster team norms for mutual respect.
  • Promote a culture of civility.
  • Become a catalyst for civility.
